Two Free Kicks the Difference for Adna Over Ocosta

Pressure paid off enough for the Adna girls soccer team on Monday, which took it home league matchup against Ocosta by a 2-0 scoreline.

“We played a lot at their end of the field most of the night,” Adna head coach Patrick Richardson said. “We just didn’t take quality shots. Ocosta packed a lot on defense, forcing us to make some adjustments.”

Richardson’s words reflected in the final shots total; Adna had 20 attempts, while Ocosta managed just one.

But for all of that, for 20 minutes the ball just wouldn’t get in the back of the net.

Eventually, as it so often does in soccer, the break came on a set piece. In the 23rd minute, the Ocosta keeper parried an Adna free kick but couldn’t get it out of the danger area, and junior Gabby Solem pounced on it to drive it home.

On the other side of halftime, the Pirates once again turned to a set piece, with senior Karlee VonMoos drilling a 40-yard free kick past the keeper to make it 2-0.

Adna (11-1, 7-0 league) will face off against Napavine on Wednesday. The Pirates downed the Tigers 3-2 two weeks ago, which to this date is Napavine’s lone league loss.
