Vikings Can’t Pull Out Win Before Break

Before a long hiatus and winter break, the Mossyrock boys basketball played its best defensive game of the season, but couldn’t make shots in a 46-35 loss to Naselle Monday night.

The Vikings had 14 points each from Keegan Kolb and Jake Comer, but struggled to shoot in what coach Adam Deck called a very ugly game.

“I’m so impressed with our defense and the way the guys competed,” he said. “They followed the game plan and our effort was great. If this team plays like this and knocks down shots, we can win some games.”

After a weekend to stew over a poor performance against Toledo last week, the Vikings came out and gave the Comets all they could handle, even without key pieces.

Zack Munoz, who had just become eligible to play this season, had to be subbed out in the opening moments for the Vikings, who suspect that the sophomore might have seriously injured his ankle. Munoz was hospitalized, but the severity of the injury is unknown.

In Munoz’s absence, though, the Vikings stepped up. Deck praised the efforts of Ben Cruz, who came in and played strong defense and didn’t commit a single turnover while being pressed into action.

Mossyrock will hope to regroup, and get rested up as it waits for its next playing date, Dec. 29.
