Vikings Open With Loss in Toutle

The Mossyrock softball team went down Spirit Lake Highway for the first of eight games playing up against Central 2B League this season, and fell to Toutle Lake 5-2 to open its season.

“We didn't start hitting the ball until the later innings,” Mossyrock coach Keith Coleman said. “Once we started attacking instead of standing and watching things worked. I was happy with it. We have lots of room for improvement and it's already showing.”

Most of Mossyrock’s hitting came from the very top of the lineup, where Hailey Brooks went 2 for 3 with a pair of solo home runs, leading off the game with a jack in the first inning and getting her second in the top of the sixth.

“There’s a reason why she’s going Division I,” Coleman said. “She’s a leader too, she’s always smiling and having fun, it’s great for our team. We’re really young, so it’s good to have. She’s like a great role model.”

Behind her, Erin Cournyer and Abbie Lovan both notched hits.

Cournyer went the distance in the circle for the Vikings, allowing five runs on eight hits and four walks, and striking out four.

Mossyrock will get the weekend to practice before taking on another C2BL opponent when it hosts Onalaska on Monday.
