Going through the season-long back-and-forth hot and cold tendencies showed up once again for the Rochester High School volleyball team in a 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 17-15 five-set heartbreaker to Elma on Thursday night.

Trailing in the match by a set and facing another four-set setback, the Warriors (0-7, 0-1 Evergreen) rallied to force a deciding fifth set and couldn’t finish off a multi-point lead in the fifth to win their first game of the season.

“We have moments where we play so, so well,” Rochester first-year head coach Courtney Baird said. “I’m still very proud of them. Hopefully, we’ll see their hard work pay off soon.”

McKenna Vassar paced the offense with 10 kills while Arissa LeBaron and Lexi Dupont chipped in six. Dupont added three blocks while Charlie Culp dished out 23 assists. Cheyenne Justice fueled the back row with 15 digs and four service aces.

Rochester claimed the first set before Elma won the next two. The Warriors have a week off before playing Monteano next Thursday.

“If somebody is going to beat us, they need to come in and actually beat us,” Baird said. “They’ve been taking it to heart.”
