Throughout the first half of Rochester’s matchup against Elma on Thursday, Rochester coach Matt Ashton felt that the Warriors were the better team.
The scoreboard didn’t reflect that, though, as Elma led by one at the break.
“I just told the ladies to believe in themselves, and the goals would come,” Ashton said.
The goals did come after the break, as Rochester scored twice in the first 12 minutes of the second half and held on for a 2-1 victory to snap a six-game losing streak in its Evergreen League opener.
Liz Hoover scored two minutes into the second half to tie the game, and ten minutes later, she assisted Kenna Pratt’s goal, which went on to stand as the game-winner.
Ashton said that coming into the game, there was a focus on tightening up the midfield, and the return of Emily Beasley helped the Warriors do just that.
“She was able to clog up the middle of the field, giving few options (to Elma),” Ashton said. “It’s nice to have her back out there for us.”
The Warriors (3-6, 1-0 1A Evergreen) will host Kelso on Tuesday in their final non-league matchup of the season.
