‘Weak’ earthquake felt Thursday night in Southwest Washington

A minor earthquake rattled parts of Southwest Washington just before 8 p.m. Thursday.

The quake was “weak,” U.S. Geologic Survey spokesperson Paul Lausten said. It registered magnitude 3.0 and was centered about 20 miles from Amboy, Wash.

He said the quake had nothing to do with Mount St. Helens, located just west, and there’s no reason to suspect it means a larger earthquake in the area is imminent.

Eighty-six people so far have reported having felt the temblor, he said.

Lausten said people are fascinated by earthquakes, and so the agency created a video to show how people can explore the agency’s “earthquake event” page.
