After setting a new lifetime best in the pole vault at the Chehalis Activators Classic, W.F. West senior Amanda Bennett reset her best mark at Wednesday’s three-team league meet on senior night with a clearance of 10 feet, 6 inches.
Bennett also secured the javelin with a toss of 126-06, the only thrower that eclipsed the century mark. Ashlen Gruginski picked up three wins, including anchoring the Bearcats’ 1,600-meter relay. The sophomore won the open 400 and leaped 31-00.05 for a new PR in the triple jump.
Trinity Gist, Emily Mallonee and Raya Jensen teamed with Gruginksi in the 1,600 relay. Gist, Aspen Gist, Lauren Kelley and Alayna Elder won the 400 relay for the Bearcats.
Tumwater’s Cassidy Hedin broke 13 seconds to win the open 100 and joined forces with Ashlyn Hufana, Ava Jones and Reese Heryford to claim the 800 relay. Jones won the 200 while Miriam Ore swept the true distance races, Claire Winkelman won both hurdles races and Paige Henderson was tops in the discus.
The T-Birds broke several lifetime bests, including hurdler Reid Crumley running 15.68 in the 110s and 40.53 in the 300 hurdles. Blake Kirkpatrick went under 22 seconds to win the 200 and also triumphed in the 100. Washington State football recruit Malijah Tucker tossed the discus over 141 feet and won the shot put.
Beckett Wall (javelin), Aaron Paul (high jump), Josh Morgan (1,600) and Hayden Newman (3,200) also won for Tumwater. W.F. West’s lone victory came from Ryan Hilliker, who cleared 12 feet even for a new PR.
Tigers show out in league meet
Behind Bill and Sam Volavola combining for three personal records, the Centralia High School boys track and field team came away with nine event victories on Wednesday night in a three-team league meet at Shelton High School.
Bill Volavola triumphed in the 200 and 400-meter dashes while Sam Volavola secured the shot put and discus. Bill broke 56 seconds in the 400 and nicked Shelton’s Kaleb Jordan at the line in the 200. Sam was the only thrower in the shot put to eclipse 50 feet.
Ethan Weiher claimed the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Tigers plus Adam Leon picked up first in the 800. Those two alongside Jacoby Corwin and Evan Thummel won by 11 seconds in the 1,600-meter relay. Black Hills’ lone winner was Darnell Butler, who jumped 37-07 to win the triple jump.
Anneliese Dale (Black Hills) and Jayden Krogness (Centralia) each won two events on the girls side. Dale set a new lifetime best of 27.80 seconds to win the 200 and also won the 100. Krogness unleashed a toss of 30-06 to win the shot put and threw the javelin over 80 feet to win by nearly two inches.
Centralia’s Anna Jones (400) and Elyse O’Dell (1,600) plus Black Hills’ Laura Mock (discus) also secured victories.
Five Warriors pick up multiple event wins
In a dual with Evergreen League foe Montesano, the Rochester High School track and field program ended up with five athletes that left Jack Sam Rottle Field with at least three victories on Wednesday night.
Montesano ended up winning both team titles, but the girls had only a four-point gap. Sprinter Merecedies Dupont set a new lifetime best of 13-seconds flat to secure the 100-meter dash and she also won the 200. Kailyn Black swept the hurdles and Kenna Pratt leaped 14 feet, 7 inches for a new personal record to claim the long jump.
Those three plus Jordyn Johnson teamed to win the 400 relay. Brooklyn Alfonso picked up the win in the javelin for the Warriors.
On the boys side, Gunnar Morgan swept the three distance races and Le’Shawn Hines secured the high jump, long jump and triple jump. He was the only competitor in the triple jump and set a new PR of 40-05.50.
The quartet of Chris Tartios, Luka Meckle, Aiden Austin and Xander Peterman won the 1,600-meter relay.
