Competing with 96 other schools in attendance, the W.F. West girls wrestling team finished an impressive 12th among the large field participating in a tournament at Kelso High School this weekend.

The Bearcats finished with three top-8 finishers, led by the work of Courtney Jones in the 135-pound weight class, who rolled all the way to the semis by fall in each round.

Jones eventually fell to Nicole Poussier of White River in the semifinals, but rebounded to win her consolation round matches by fall to finish third overall at the tournament.

W.F. West’s Kaylee Lehman, also competing in the 135-pound section, finished seventh overall, pinning Leslie Sanchez of Ephrata in the trophy round match to secure some hardware.

In the 140-pound section, the Bearcats’ Lia Hornby also finished seventh, pinning Kyndra Casias of Richland in the trophy round.

Elsewhere, Centralia finished 49th as a team with 45 total points and just four wrestlers, led by Luna Martinez-Arevalo in the 100-pound class. Martinez-Arevalo won each of the first two rounds by fall before a 1-0 defeat to Dhaile De Guzman of Moses Lake in the third round to fall to the consolation bracket. But she fought through the consolation rounds to finish seventh and place for the Tigers.

Jade Hudson also had a strong showing for the Tigers, losing in the very first round to R.A. Long’s Althea Walker before battling all the way through the consolation bracket, one round short of the trophy round. Hudson won four matches in the consolation round to score some points for the Tigers.

Tenino’s Trinity Tafoya also competed in the tournament in the 190-pound class, rolling all the way to the semifinals all by fall before losing to Tru Willis of Silas. Tafoya ended up finishing sixth overall in her class.
