Led by its top doubles pair and singles player, the W.F. West girls tennis team will be represented in both Sub-District singles and doubles championship games Tuesday after good performances Monday afternoon in Black Hills and Tumwater.

The Bearcats’ top doubles pair of Laura Yip and Katelyn Wood were the No. 1 seeded pair heading into the Sub-District, or 2A Evergreen Conference, tournament, and earned a bye in the first round.

In the quarterfinals, the duo defeated Julia Rupke and Psy Nguyen of Tumwater, 6-1, 6-0, and then defeated Centralia’s Maya Lackie and Maddy Breckel in the semifinals, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.

Yip and Wood will take on Stella Moore and Chloe Witcraft of Black Hills tomorrow for a Sub-District title.

On the singles side, W.F. West’s top player, Mari Ceesay, advanced the Sub-District title after a couple of dominant wins and a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed.

Ceesay defeated Aberdeen’s Hadley Ritter in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-4, and then defeated Tumwater’s Kendall Gjurasic, 6-1, 6-3, in the semifinals to advance to the title match tomorrow against Shelton’s Hannah Pratt.

The singles matches took a turn Monday afternoon when top-seeded Olivia Kee of Tumwater showed up late, and had to forfeit her quarterfinal match and head to the consolation rounds.

As a result, a rested Kee took on W.F. West’s No. 2 player, Viviana Ibanez, in a loser-out match and took her down, 6-0, 6-0. Ibanez was coming off a first round win over Tumwater’s Zoe Guintoli, 6-3, 6-2, and a quarterfinal loss to Pratt, 6-2, 6-1.

W.F. West’s third singles player, Alayna Leal, fell to Centralia’s Olivia Norris in the first round, 6-1, 6-0.

On the doubles side, W.F. West’s No. 3 pair of Jaime Bradley and Ellie Mittge fell in the first round to Aberdeen’s Madi Ritter and Natalie Mareth, 6-3, 6-2.

W.F. West No. 2 pair of Ema Weerasinghe and Lillian Hueffed took down Shelton’s Adalyn Kapa and Josefina Francisco, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, before falling to Tumwater’s Emily Meek and Brook Borovec 6-0, 6-0.

That pair kept its season alive, however, in the consolation quarterfinals, defeating Centralia’s Sophia Wiley and Aydan Butler, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. Weerasinghe and Hueffed will play in a loser-out, winner moves on match against Centralia’s Leckie and Breckel Tuesday.
