W.F. West’s Graysen Serl and Tucker Land went unbeaten at The Orting Invite on Saturday, earning them first-place finishes in their respective weight classes.

Serl came out on top at 157, pinning his first two opponents before winning by decision in the championship.

Land only had to go 2-0 at 190 after receiving a first-round bye, and he pinned his semifinal opponent before also winning his championship match by decision.

Serl and Land weren’t the only Bearcats to place. Andrew Snyder (165) placed second, Race Scalici (144) and Beau Guyette (150) placed third, and Ryker Jensen (106), Lewis Allen (132), and Liam Land (138) each finished fourth.

It was a welcome sight for W.F. West coach Jamie Rakevich, who noted that there were several state placers and champions in both 4A and 2A in the tournament.

Hornby takes first at Pac Coast Tournament

The W.F. West girls wrestling team put the finishing touches on a top-10 performance in Ridgefield on Saturday, placing ninth at the Pac Coast Tournament.

Freshman Lucy Hornby stole the show, pinning Columbia River senior Jersey O’Neil in the championship match at 110 to come away with a first-place finish.

“Lucy looked extremely poised in her most complete tournament this weekend,” W.F. West girls coach Matt Patana said.

Aurora Martin (130) made it to the championship match with three wins before falling to Central Kitsap’s Deijah Diego. Emily Mallonee (135) was W.F. West’s other placer, as she took sixth.

“It was certainly a day of learning and growth,” Patana said. “We are going to be a stronger team from the experience. I am proud of the girls and look forward to seeing them in the weeks ahead.”
