Winter Whale Watch Week returns to the Oregon coast

Winter whale watching returns to the Oregon coast this week.

Oregon’s two official whale watch events – winter and spring – follow the migration of gray whales. In the winter, the whales head south to Mexico, traveling along the West Coast.

The events are put on by the Oregon State Parks department.

Winter Whale Watch Week runs from Dec. 27-31.

There will be 15 official whale watching sites along the Oregon coast for the migration, according to Oregon State Parks.

Each site will be staffed with volunteers who will “help you spot the whales and answer your questions,” the state parks website says.

The Oregon coast has seen big waves in the past few weeks. Stormy weather and high tides at the coast can create dangerous conditions, so always follow safety guidelines if you head out to do some whale watching. Watch out for sneaker waves, maintain a safe distance and, of course, never turn your back on the ocean.

Spring whale watch events will take place in March, just in time for spring break.
