Tenino withstands Aberdeen rally, pulls away for win

The Tenino girls soccer team got back in the win column in a big way on Saturday, as the Beavers topped Aberdeen 5-2.

“Great win,” Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said. “It really kind of showed that if we play within our system and keep making good passes, we’re going to find a lot of success. We’re so happy with the team right now.”

Callie Mickelson got the Beavers (2-1-1) early, scoring two goals in the first half and finishing off the hat trick just 10 minutes into the second.

“Callie was just on one,” Montgomery said.

The first goal was a “spectacular” volley flick, and she followed that up by beating the keeper vertically for the second. Her third goal was the culmination of an excellent sequence from the entire team, as Nessa Culp made the last of several great passes to Mickelson, who put it home near the back post.

Aberdeen got right back into the match with two goals in two minutes 10 minutes after Mickelson’s third, but Holly Thoren scored on a Kyla Watson cross just three minutes later to push the lead back to two.

Just two minutes later, Thoren got the ball to Paisley Garcia, who scored from the 18-yard line to extend the lead back to three.

“That was something we struggled with a little bit last year,” Montgomery said. “Throughout the summer and carrying into the season, we’re able to withstand a barrage of a team and go get some goals of our own.”

The Beavers will return home on Tuesday, when they’ll face Onalaska on the blacktop.
