UPDATE: U.S. 26 has been reopened.

A crash that killed a pedestrian at about 2 a.m. Tuesday has closed all eastbound traffic on U.S. 26 from Sylvan into the tunnel, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation and Portland police.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a pedestrian dead. The driver involved in the crash had left the scene, the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement.

All drivers are being diverted onto the Sylvan overpass, and must choose another route north or south of the Sunset Highway into town.

Police said the closure likely will be in place “for several hours.”

Eastbound commuters heading into downtown may want to use Burnside or Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway to get around the crash.
