Two convicted traffickers and 30 alleged buyers are facing charges related to the sexual exploitation and abuse of one child in Portland, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Police are also asking for help locating eight of the men, who have warrants for their arrest.
“(Children) are the most vulnerable individuals in our community,” Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney J.R. Ujifusa said. “They are local kids, local children, who are being purchased by local men for commercial sex.”
The abuse of the girl began in 2020, and detectives began investigating in 2023, police said. The girl was trafficked through the internet and from the street, police said. She was between the ages of 13 and 17 when the abuse occurred.
The two traffickers, Kai’leif Newcomb, 24, and 34-year-old Domonique Williams, both have been convicted of compelling and promoting prostitution, among other charges. Newcomb was sentenced to 15 years in prison and Williams to 19.
Six other people have also already been convicted in the case. Sixteen men have been arrested and have pending cases, and eight men are at large and being sought by police.
Sgt. Onest Robert from Portland police’s human trafficking unit said that recently there has been an influx of children in the city who are being trafficked.
“This is a huge problem we’re seeing,” Robert said. “Our goal is to make this stop.”
Ujifusa said prosecutors believe there may be a “significant” number of additional “buyers” in this case, and they are working to identify them.
“We are committed to not only holding traffickers accountable,” he said, “but buyers.”
