3.9 magnitude earthquake hits Vancouver, B.C., area Friday morning

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.9 hit the Vancouver, British Columbia, area early Friday morning, according to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network.

The quake occurred just after 2 a.m. about 15 miles west of Vancouver in the Strait of Georgia, an arm of the Salish Sea between Vancouver Island and the mainland coast of British Columbia.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake took place 38 miles beneath the surface and that weak shakes were felt in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported.
