A 6-year-old Redmond child died near Suttle Lake after being struck by a driver with a camping trailer on Saturday.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened at the Link Creek Campground, about 3 miles from the lake. The child and a 5-year-old, who was not injured, were walking toward the lake from their campground after looking for a stuffed animal.
Officers say the child was behind the vehicle and trailer when they were struck by a Portland driver. Witnesses said the camper was moving extremely slowly.
Family members and other campers near the scene tried to save the child’s life. The child was life-flighted to St. Charles Bend and later pronounced dead.
Investigators said they believe the 6-year-old was hit when they unintentionally got between the tow vehicle and camping trailer.
Police say the driver cooperated with responders and law enforcement on the scene. Investigators found no evidence of intoxication or criminal behavior at that time.
