72-year-old wakeboarder dies on Columbia River

A 72-year-old man died Sunday morning while wake boarding on the Columbia River after his tow rope became tangled in the boat’s propeller, pulling him under.

A spokesperson for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy John Plock, said the man hit his head under the boat and was underwater for five minutes, witnesses said. His name has not been released.

Wakeboarding is permitted on the Columbia River, unlike certain stretches of the Willamette River.

On July 27, another man died near the same spot on the Columbia River near Government Island after he fell in the water without a life jacket.

Rescuers remind Oregonians that rivers and lakes in the state pose many hazards that are potentially fatal.
