Police have publicly identified the suspect and victim in a shooting that apparently was part of a string of break-ins at three Vancouver homes last week.

Cynthia Vance, 77, of Vancouver, died of a gunshot wound, officials said. Her death was ruled a homicide.

The suspect, Triston McGarrah, 29, of Vancouver, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said.

Vance was a victim in what police believe was a series of home break-ins by McGarrah, who lived in the same complex of attached duplexes as Vance.

On July 23, a 43-year-old man called police and reported that another man had burst through a window and into his townhome on Northeast 22nd Street near 136th Avenue in the Landover-Sharmel neighborhood, according to police.

The man was wounded during a fight with the intruder, but not by gunfire, Vancouver police spokesperson Kim Kapp said.

Officers arrived on the scene and soon learned of a second home invasion nearby, where Vance was fatally shot.

A 74-year-old man in a third residence was also injured, but not by gunfire, police said.

The two injured men were transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening wounds, police said. McGarrah, the suspect, was found dead inside his own home.
