The City of Tenino will be celebrating its 150th birthday on July 8 and city officials have organized a sesquicentennial jubilee. It is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and end at 7 p.m. according to a news release.
Featuring all kinds of family fun, the 150th Jubilee will be held at Tenino City Park and Quarry House at 201 Washington Ave. E., Tenino.
Right at 10 a.m., the opening ceremony will commence complete with colors posted courtesy of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5878, music — including a rendition of the national anthem from the brass quintet of America’s First Corps Band out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord — and speeches from Tenino Mayor Wayne Fournier and state Rep. Peter Abbarno.
Procession registration for the “Silly Procession and General Hullabaloo Walking Parade” also begins at 10 a.m., along with the kid zone bounce houses and carnival row. Both will remain open until 4 p.m.
No motorized vehicles will be allowed in the parade and participants must be wearing “family friendly” costumes. Pet costumes are optional, as is having an instrument or a decorated human-powered mode of transportation such as a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, rickshaw, derby car or tricycle.
A total of 18 Tenino-area organizations will have booths on carnival row, including:
• A costume booth with Tenino Young-at-Heart Theatre
• A sculpture booth with Monarch Sculpture Park and Art Center
• Fishing the Quarry game booth with the Tenino Parent Teacher Student Association
• A lasso, horseshoes and how-to-make brands booth with Colvin Ranch
• A lollipop booth with Tenino-area farmers
• A ring toss booth with the First Presbyterian Church of Tenino
• Football and golf with the Tenino Athletic Booster Club
• A books and crafts booth with Cornerstone Community Church
• A recruitment booth for Scouts Troop/Pack 14
• A dunk tank with South Thurston Fire & EMS
• A booth with stone carving demonstrations
• Brandon’s blacksmithing demonstration
• A Tenino Lions Club display booth
• A 4H display booth with a sheep, goat and calf
• A face painting booth
• A Ping-Pong balls-in-a-cup game with prizes
• A wheel-spin booth
• A water station booth with the Tenino Community Service Center
The jubilee is sponsored by the Colvin Ranch and other Tenino-area farmers.
Additionally, the food booths will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and feature kettle corn, cotton candy, Italian sodas, hamburgers, hot dogs and food from Bigfoot BBQ, Steevee’s Sweet Treats, Lava Shaved Ice and Boogie Beans Coffee Truck. From 3 to 8 p.m., Shy’z Lunchbox will be selling food and Raise for Rowyn will host a beer garden.
Then, at 11 a.m., Rattlin’ Bog will perform on the Quarry House stage while the Silly Procession and General Hullabaloo Walking Parade begins to line up.
At 11:30 a.m., the Silly Procession and General Hullabaloo Walking Parade will start. Prizes will be awarded for best historic costume, best silly costume, best musical group, best pet costume, best non-motorized vehicle and a most creative award. All parade participants will receive a jubilee button.
Then, at noon, birthday cake will be served at the Quarry House and Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez will present the congressional record, according to the release.
The Tenino Talent Show also begins at noon at the Quarry House stage, along with pony rides until 3 p.m.
After that, at 12:30 p.m., field games begin. In-person registration is required to participate.
At 2 p.m., Olympia magician Jeff Evans will perform on the Quarry House stage in a show sponsored by the Tenino Timberland Library.
The jubilee’s final event will be the Quarry House Music Festival from 3 to 8 p.m. featuring performances by The Mike Pierce Project, Imposter Syndrome and the Tempo Lake Band.
Aside from the farmers, Colvin Ranch and Tenino Timberland Library, Tenino’s 150th Jubilee is also sponsored by Tenino Band Boosters, South Thurston County Historical Society, Castle Realty, Colleen Casey Farmers Insurance Agency, Oly Builds, the Tenino Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Tenino.
Other events going on in Tenino on July 8 include the Tenino Farmers Market and Tenino Creative Arts Market, both from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Tenino, and a chalk art contest on Olympia Street sponsored by Tenino Arts.
Additionally, the Tenino Depot Museum will be open and operating its wooden money printing press. The book “Tenino 150 Years, Sesquicentennial Stories” will also be released for sale.
