Over 200 students from Orin C. Smith School in Chehalis visited the Washington state Capitol this week, where they met with state Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Chehalis, and got a firsthand look at their state government, a news release announced.

Abbarno met separately with both fourth- and fifth-grade students, answering questions about the legislative process, civic responsibility and what it means to serve the community. Students also toured the Capitol and explored how ideas become laws.

"It is always such a joy to spend time with these incredible Cougars," said Abbarno, House Republican Caucus chair. "Their curiosity and thoughtful questions were impressive. Visits like this help students see that government belongs to the people and their voice matters, whether you're at the Capitol or back home in Chehalis."

The Capitol visit provided students with an up-close look at Washington's legislative process and encouraged them to become engaged citizens, according to the release. Abbarno thanked the teachers, staff and families who made the trip possible.

"I'm grateful to the Chehalis School District and everyone who helped make this visit happen," Abbarno said. "Providing students with opportunities like this helps spark an interest in public service and shows them they can play an active role in shaping their communities."

Orin C. Smith School emphasizes collaboration, character development and hands-on learning. The Capitol visit reinforced those values by connecting students directly with their state lawmakers, the release stated.
