Morton Manor Adult Family Home and a nearby residence were evacuated as a precaution as firefighters responded to a structure fire on Friday, Sept. 18.

At about 3:10 p.m. Friday, Lewis County Fire District 4 responded to a structure fire on Adams Avenue. The first-arriving engine was at the scene by 3:16 p.m.

“Firefighters found a single-story, double-wide mobile home with smoke showing from the rear of the building, visible from the alley,” District 4 Fire Chief Bill Reynolds stated in a news release. “The fire caused significant damage to the rear of the structure.”

One firefighter was transported to Arbor Health Morton Hospital for observation, Reynolds said.

As a precaution, one neighboring home and Morton Manor Adult Family Home were evacuated as firefighters gained control over the blaze.

“We received mutual aid assistance from Lewis County Fire District 3 and Lewis County Fire District 9,” Reynolds wrote. “A special thank you to the Morton Police Department officers and Heritage House for their assistance in safely transporting residents from Morton Manor Adult Family Home to a safe location during the event. We appreciate the cooperation and support of everyone involved in keeping our community safe.”

On Facebook, Heritage House Morton Assisted Living and Memory Care thanked emergency responders.

“The recent fire in Morton was a harrowing experience, but our staff’s immediate and selfless response to safely transport every resident from Morton Manor AFH was truly heroic,” Heritage House wrote. “We are beyond grateful for their courage and quick thinking, as they consistently go above and beyond for our community.”

Reynolds didn’t say what caused the fire.
