A woman is dead after an Amtrak train crashed into her car Tuesday afternoon in Milwaukie.

The collision happened at the train crossing at the intersection of Southeast Harrison Street and 31st Avenue, according to Milwaukie police. Officials haven’t released the name of the car’s driver.

Clackamas firefighters removed the woman from her car following the crash, and she was taken to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries, officials said.

The woman’s car was stopped on the train tracks when it was struck by the southbound train, according to police reports. The railroad crossing gates were down at the time of the crash.

The passenger train stopped after hitting the car, police said.

The car was hurled into a nearby utility pole by the crash, which caused some residents in the area to lose power. Portland General Electric is working to repair the damaged lines, according to officials.

Roadways near the incident were closed for several hours following the crash, but all streets are now open.

Clackamas County agencies and Amtrak Police will continue to investigate the fatal crash.

This was the second time in the past few months that a train hit a car at that intersection in Milwaukie. On Feb. 20, an Amtrak train struck an empty car on the tracks in the same location. No one was injured in the earlier crash.
