Applications open for Lewis County Master Gardener Training Program

Posted

The WSU Lewis County Master Gardener Program is now accepting applications for the 2026-2027 training year, a news release announced.

Individuals interested in research‑based horticulture education and community outreach are encouraged to apply by Sept. 28. Accepted applicants will receive a 50% discount code for the Washington Gardener Certificate course through WSU’s Green School, with online registration open through Sep. 30.

WSU’s Green School provides the horticulture training itself, and all learners who complete the coursework earn the Washington Gardener Certificate. Participants can choose between two pathways:

• Master Gardener Volunteer Pathway includes the full online Green School curriculum plus hands‑on local training and a 40‑hour volunteer internship for those who want to serve their communities through plant clinics, demonstration gardens and public education.

• Washington Gardener Certificate Only Pathway is a fully online, self‑paced option designed for home gardeners, educators and professionals who want research‑based horticulture training without a volunteer requirement.

Training runs from Oct. 5 through mid‑February 2027 and includes 12 weekly online modules paired with approximately 20 hours of local volunteer training. Major topics include native plants, vegetable gardening in Western Washington, soils and composting, plant problem diagnosis, propagation, entomology, weed and pesticide management, and urban tree care.

Applications are available at the WSU Lewis County Extension office, and printed copies are preferred for accessibility. Interested individuals may email, call or visit the office to request an application.

After submitting an application, candidates will schedule an informal interview, followed by a required background check. Upon approval, applicants receive a discount code and instructions  for registering for the Washington Gardener Certificate course.

The WSU Lewis County Extension Office is located 17 SW Cascade Ave., Chehalis.
