Aurora Avenue shooting leaves teenager injured

A 15-year-old boy was shot and seriously injured Tuesday night on Aurora Avenue, Seattle police say. But reports of the shooting remain dubious.

Police say they think the boy was driving a vehicle on Aurora Avenue North near North 93rd Street when a passenger in the back seat who was “manipulating a handgun” accidentally shot him, police said. The alleged accidental shooter then got out and ran.

Witnesses called in to report the shooting, but when officers arrived at North 93rd Street and Aurora Avenue North, they found no shell casings or other evidence of the shooting, said police spokesperson Brian Pritchard said.

The shooting was originally reported as a drive by, police said.

One witness told police that the boy was walking on the sidewalk and got shot by someone driving by a dark-colored sedan, Pritchard said, but that account is likely not what happened.

There appear to be inconsistencies and “untruths” in witness reports, Pritchard said, but some accounts and footage captured from the Real Time Crime Center are consistent with the narrative that the boy was shot inside a vehicle.

Police suspect the boy who was shot drove several blocks, then got out and walked to 10507 Aurora Ave. N., where Seattle Fire Department crews were at an unrelated call, Pritchard said.

The boy was taken to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition and could not be interviewed by police for his account of the shooting, Pritchard said.

The alleged shooter has not been found or arrested, he said.

Police are investigating the shooting.
