Authorities identify pilot killed in eastern Oregon wildfire

The pilot of a small tanker plane that went missing Thursday while fighting a wildfire in eastern Oregon has been identified as 74-year-old James Bailey Maxwell.

Maxwell’s body was found Friday in the wreckage of the single-engine air tanker.

The pilot had 54 years of experience with 24,000 hours of flight time, authorities said, and was working near the Falls fire Thursday.

A single-engine tanker, or SEAT, is small and nimble and can deliver up to 800 gallons of fire retardant or water, the U.S. Forest Service wrote on Facebook Sunday.
