Bail is set at $100,000 for a man accused of showing up at an ex-girlfriend’s home in Chehalis early Tuesday morning and assaulting her.

An officer with the Chehalis Police Department was dispatched to the assault just before 3:15 a.m. on May 28, according to charging documents filed in Lewis County Superior Court.

The victim reported that she had woken up to find James Hart, 51, of Chehalis, knocking on her door. Hart allegedly started an argument with the victim in the doorway and then began to choke the victim. He left the scene before an officer arrived.

The responding officer noted “there was a pot on the porch that had been knocked over and other items strewn about,” and also noted the victim’s clothing was torn and she had visible injuries on both sides of her neck.

The victim was taken to the hospital for medical treatment while officers searched for Hart.

Police located him later that morning and transported him to the hospital for medical clearance before he was booked into the Lewis County Jail, according to charging documents. Jail records indicate he was booked on one count of second-degree assault, domestic violence, at 10:25 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28.

He was formally charged in Lewis County Superior Court on Wednesday, May 29.

Arraignment is scheduled for Thursday, June 6.
