Balanced Tigers throttle Loggers, on doorstep of perfect league record

Fueled by five players finishing with at least five points and a stout night on the defensive side of the court, the Napavine High School girls basketball team cruised by Onalaska 60-36 on the road on Thursday night.

The victory secures a C2BL title for the Tigers, since they beat one-loss Adna in the only regular season meeting, and they’ll also be the No. 1 seed in the Class 2B District 4 tournament that kicks off next Saturday. They can finish off a perfect league record with a win over Toledo at home on Saturday.

It was a 20-point halftime lead for Napavine (15-4, 6-0 C2BL) that proved to be enough to coast in the second half. Taylen Evander paced its scoring with 21 points and was 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Ava Ondong added 10 points off the bench while Hayden Kaut and Nicholle Valentine chipped in nine and eight points, respectively.

Kaut grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds and Hannah Fay dished out five assists. The Tigers held Onalaska to just 15 made field goals and limited the 3-point attack to three buckets.

For the Loggers (10-6, 3-2), they didn’t have anyone in double figures, but Emalie Jacoby finished as their leading scorer with eight points plus grabbed nine boards and recorded four steals. Leah Hamilton recorded seven points and Renzy Marshall had six.

“We had some solid possessions and defensive stops, but overall we weren't consistent enough,” Onalaska head coach Alana Olson said. “A good team like Napavine makes you pay every time you have a lapse. We will learn from this game and be ready to go the next time we step on the court.”

Onalaska is in a battle with Toutle Lake and Toledo for a top-three league finish and it will likely be decided on Saturday when the Loggers and Ducks meet in Toutle.
