Bearcats ride middle-innings surge to win over Wolves

The W.F. West baseball team got back in the win column on Tuesday, defeating Black Hills 7-1 on their home turf.

W.F. West took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from Carlos Vallejo, but the Bearcats didn’t take control for good until they scored six runs from the fourth to the sixth.

Ross Kelley hit an RBI triple in the fifth and an RBI single in the sixth, while Vallejo brought home two more with a double in the sixth.

Kelley finished 2 for 2 with his two RBIs, and he drew two walks, and Vallejo finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Hiroto Smaiciarz added two hits in four trips to the plate.’

Hayden Rooney was excellent on the bump, allowing just one hit and one run while walking no one and striking out 10 in six innings of work, while Emmett Goodman struck out two in a perfect inning of relief in the seventh.

Black Hills’ Lincoln Brannin collected the Wolves lone hit, while Willie Kytta allowed four hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out three in five innings on the bump.

The Wolves (1-4, 1-3 2A EvCo) and Bearcats (9-1, 4-0) will face off again on Wednesday at Black Hills.
