The Tenino girls soccer team kicked off its 2024 campaign with a win on Saturday, as the Beavers defeated Chelan 3-1 in their home opener.
“It was great to be able to dictate the tempo and really control possession throughout,” Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said. “We were mostly happy.”
Emily Battin got the Beavers on the board in the 19th minute with the lone goal of the first half, while Holly Thoren and Callie Mickelson scored five minutes apart to triple the lead to 3-0.
Chelan was able to get on the board in the final five minutes, but it was too little, too late.
The Beavers (1-0) outshot the Mountain Goats 13-2, and it would have been worse had Tenino not been called for offsides seven times.
“It would have been nice to have a few more goals,” Montgomery admitted. “There was some meat left on the bone.”
Midfielder Paisley Garcia didn’t show up a lot on the final stat sheet, but Montgomery commended her ability to win the ball in the midfield and move it upfield.
“Pretty unlucky to not have a couple of assists,” Montgomery said.
Montgomery was also pleased with the performance from the back four, including Kaycee Jones, who is back after a year off.
“It was a lot of fun to see several girls take some big steps towards the season,” Montgomery said.
The Beavers will be back in action on Monday at Overlake.
