Beavers route Goats to kick season off

The Tenino girls soccer team made a long journey worth it Saturday, blowing out Chelan 7-0 in a non-league contest to open the fall.

Freshman Callie Mickelson bagged a first-half hat trick, scoring goals in the fifth, 15th, and 34 minutes off of assists from Maria Summers, Kyla Watson, and Kyra Dirks.

“Callie Mickleson up front was fantastic today,” Tenino coach Dave Montgomery said. “Not only did she have that hat trick, but she did a good job of distributing the ball to other people.”

Abagail Archibald, one of three seniors on the Beavers’ roster, scored in the seventh minute, then went off for two more in the second half for a hat trick of her own.

Archibald and Dirks terrorized the Goats all game long out wide.

“We’ve been trying to place some passes, pick up our heads, see the field, scan the field, and take what the defense gives us,” Montgomery said. “I knew going into this one, we’d be able to play the wings a little bit more, and they did a fantastic job.”

Junior Holly Thoren capped the afternoon off with a goal in the 75th minute ,off an assist from Tate Carboneau

The Beavers kept their foot on the gas all match long, scoring their seven goals on 16 shots — and getting flagged for offsides nine other times.

On the other side, the Tenino defense kept the Goats from ever sniffing its net, holding the hosts to one shot.

Tenino will come back to western Washington for its next game, playing at Onalaska on Tuesday.
