Best of the Rest from Day 1 in Spokane

Posted

Day 1 in Spokane is in the books, and three area teams punched their tickets to the quarterfinals with wins on Wednesday.

The Rainier and Mossyrock girls were eliminated, but five area teams — the Napavine boys and girls, the Adna boys and girls, and the Mossyrock boys — are set to begin play in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament beginning on Thursday.

Before we fully turn the page to Thursday, let’s take a quick look at some other notables from the first day in Spokane.

2B Boys

Wahkiakum and Toutle Lake represented the C2BL well, as both won Round of 12 matchups to stay alive.

Zakk Carlson and Kyler Sause combined for 51 points to lead the Mules past Tri-Cities Prep 76-57, while Zach Swanson led the Ducks with 30 points to lead Toutle Lake to a 64-46 win over Tonasket.

Avi West scored 22 points to help lead Northwest Christian (Colbert) top Chief Leschi 59-53, and Asher West added 15.

2B Girls

No. 2 Warden and No. 3 Okanogan both handled business, as the Cougars topped Davenport 64-49 and the Bulldogs bounced Cle Elum with a 53-46 win.

Lauryn Madsen and Makenna Klitzke led the way for Warden, combining for five 3-pointers and 38 points, while Jacey Boesel and Alex Goetz combined for 33 points to lead Okanogan.

1B Boys

Mossyrock’s comeback over Summit Classical Christian wasn’t the only close game on Wednesday, as No. 16 Columbia Adventist upset No. 8 Naselle to move on to the quarterfinals.

Collin Delaney led Columbia Adventist with 18 points, and Tristan White added 12.

The Kodiaks are the lowest seed remaining in either 1B or 2B tournament, and they’ll go up against the defending champion, No. 2 Wellpinit, on Thursday.

Makyah Chambers led Neah Bay to a 58-43 win over Oakesdale with 21 points, and Tyler Swan tallied 17.

Cusick’s balance was enough to down Payton Brown and Muckleshoot Tribal, as the Panthers came away with a 64-54 win. Brown led all scorers with 29 points, but four Panthers scored at least 14, led by Roland Campbell, who scored 17.

1B Girls

Lucy Hockett and Payton Davis scored 32 of Oakesdale’s 44 points, leading the Nighthawks to a 44-35 win over Lummi Nation.

Garfield-Palouse bested Almira-Coulee-Hartline in another defensive battle, as the Vikings advanced with a 41-32 victory. Morgan Lentz led the Vikings with 20 points, and Molly Huffman hauled in 12 rebounds.

Sunnyside Christian topped Curlew 39-33, and Taylor Andringa led the Knights with 12 points. Annika Baker and Emma Lena Baker combined for 27 of Curlew’s 33.
