Best of the Rest from the Quarterfinals in Spokane

Two days down, two to go.

Four area teams — the Napavine boys and girls, Adna girls, and Mossyrock boys — are through to the semifinals, while another, the Adna boys, is still in the hunt for a top 6 finish.

Here’s a quick look at some notables from the other quarterfinals throughout the day.

2B Boys

No. 6 Toutle Lake couldn’t keep up with No. 4 Lake Roosevelt, as the Raiders blew past the Ducks 69-31. The trio of Ivan Alejandre, Brandon Pino, and Chase Marchand combined for 46 points to lead the Raiders. Zach Swanson led Toutle Lake with 15, but no other Duck scored more than six.

No. 12 Wahkiakum lost by almost an identical scoreline to No. 3 Colfax, as the Bulldogs won 68-31. Jayce Kelly led the Bulldogs with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Seth Lustig added 12 points and eight rebounds of his own. Zakk Carlson and Kyler Sause were shut down for the most part, as the C2BL first-teamers combined for just 17 points.

2B Girls

No. 3 Okanogan topped No. 4 Colfax in a defensive battle, winning 44-37. Alex Goetz led Okanogan with 12, while Alex Goetz added 10 and Aleena Lafferty scored eight. Brynn McGaughy and Hailey Demier combined for 29 of Colfax’s 37 points. 

No. 2 Warden avenged its district title game loss to No. 8 Mabton, as the Cougars topped the Vikings 72-64. Two Cougars recorded double-doubles, as Lauryn Madson scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Makenna Klitzke scored 14 points and hauled in 10 rebounds.

Alana Zavala, Esmeralda Sanchez, and Jasmin Chavez combined for 49 points, and each one scored at least 15.

1B Boys

No. 4 DeSales and No. 6 Cusick opened the day with a bang, as a late Cusick bucket sent the game into OT. The Fighting Irish dominated the extra frame, outscoring the Panthers 10-2 to pull away for a 56-48 win.

Spencer Green led DeSales with 22 points, while Maddox Filan 15. Roland Campbell led the Panthers with 19.

No. 5 Neah Bay came away with a 62-54 win over No. 3 Moses Lake Christian-Covenant Christian, led by four scorers in double-digits. Tyler Swan scored 14 and grabbed 11 rebounds, Jodell Wimberly and Makayah Chambers tallied 11 points, and Daniel Cumming logged 10.

Jonah Roberton and Johnny Ferguson led the Lions with 34 combined, and Ferguson grabbed 12 rebounds to notch a double-double.

No. 16 Columbia Adventist’s Cinderella run came to an end, as the Kodiaks fell to No. 2 Wellpinit 70-50. The reigning champions pulled away in the fourth, outscoring the Kodiaks 20-5 in the final frame.

Grant Denison III scored 31 points to lead Wellpinit, and Franky Wynne added 17. Tristan White and Collin Delaney combined for 30 to lead the way for Columbia Adventist.

1B Girls

Two late free throws helped No. 4 Crosspoint beat No. 6 Oakesdale, as the Warriors came away with a 42-41 win. The Warriors were down eight going into the fourth, but outscored the Nighthawks 17-8 in the final stanza.

Riya Robosa led Crosspoint with 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Momoyo Iwata also tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Iwata also came away with five steals. Lucy Hockett led the Nighthawks in scoring with 13 points, and Payton Davis finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

No. 1 Neah Bay took care of business against No. 7 Wilbur-Creston-Keller, winning 59-42. Five different Red Devils scored at least six points, led by Qwaapeys Greene’s 14. Brystal Neilsen led the Wildcats with 15 points, and Kaidyn Maioho came down with 10 rebounds.

No. 3 Waterville-Mansfield dominated against No. 12 Garfield-Palouse, taking an 11-point lead in the first and never looking back in a 57-33 win. Holly Finkbeiner scored 20 points, and she was one of three Shockers in double-figures. Kyra Brantner scored 14 points and tallied eight rebounds for the Vikings.

No. 2 Mount Vernon Christian ended the night with a 41-26 win over No. 9 Sunnyside Christian. For a while, the game was in contention for becoming the lowest-scoring game in tournament history, as Mount Vernon led 19-9 late in the third quarter. Both teams got going in the fourth, combining for nearly as many points in that frame (33) as the first three combined (34).

Allie Heino scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Hurricanes, and Kiera Link scored seven and also came down with eight boards. Devan Harrington led the Knights with 10 points.
