Best of the Rest: Semifinals and Consolation Games

After 48 games across three days, the state championship games are set.

The Mossyrock boys are on a Cinderella run as the No. 7 seed, while the Napavine girls are showing why they were the No. 1 seed coming in.

The Napavine boys and Adna girls are out of contention for a state title, but both can finish as high as third with wins tomorrow. The Adna boys can take fourth with a win.

Before we turn the page to the final day in Spokane, let’s take a quick peek at the standouts from Friday. 

2B Boys

Top-seeded Columbia stayed unbeaten with a 64-54 win over No. 4 Lake Roosevelt. Quincy Scott finished tied for the team-high with 17 points, and he had the highlight of the day when he buried a fourth-quarter putback slam to ice the game.

Caden Ross also scored 17 for the Coyotes, and Tristan Frimodt added 16 and 10 rebounds. Chase Marchand did a lot of the heavy lifting for the Raiders, tallying 27 points and seven rebounds.

No. 9 Northwest Christian (Colbert) advanced to the 4th/6th game with a 73-55 win over No. 12 Wahkiakum. It was a one-point game going into the fourth, but the Crusaders outscored the Mules 28-11 in the final frame to pull away.

Avi West and Ben Slade combined for 45 for NW Christian, while Zakk Carlson scored 23 in his final high school game at Wahkiakum.

2B Girls

No. 3 Okanogan is back in the championship game for the second straight season, as the Bulldogs topped No. 2 Warden 52-45. Jacey Boesel scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Okanogan, while Lauryn Madsen led the Cougars with 18 points. 

In the consolation bracket, Esmeralda Sanchez and Alana Zavala combined for 44 points to lead No. 8 Mabton to an upset over No. 4 Colfax. Brynn McGaughy scored 24 and hauled in eighth rebounds for the Bulldogs, but it’s the Vikings, who trailed by as many as 11, that are through to the 4th/6th game.

They’ll go up against No. 7 Brewster, who handled No. 12 Toutle Lake in a 70-54 win. Morgan McGuire scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Beats, while Lainey Dean led the Ducks with 15 points.

1B Boys

No. 2 Wellpinit will get the chance to go back-to-back, as the Redskins punched their ticket to the title game with a 72-57 win over No. 5 Neah Bay. The two sides were tied at halftime, but a 23-8 third quarter was the difference.

Grant Denison III led Wellpinit with 26 points on 11 of 17 shooting, while Andrew Moyer and Franky Wynne combined for 27. Makyah Chambers led the Red Devils with 18 points.

The 4th/6th match will end up being a top-three matchup, as No. 1 Lummi Nation and No. 3 Moses Lake Christian/Covenant Christian bounced back from quarterfinal upsets.

The Blackhawks dominated No. 6 Cusick, going up by as much as 23 en route to a 54-33 win. Landon Day led Lummi Nation with 14 points, and Tony Abrams logged 13 rebounds. Bode Seymour accounted for nearly half of Cusick’s points, tallying 15.

The Lions also took care of business against No. 16 Columbia Adventist, winning 62-42. No Lion scored more than 13 points, but six different Lions tallied at least seven. Collin Delaney, Logan Pierce, and Gareth Neufeld combined for 36 of the Kodiaks’ 42.

1B Girls

The last two state champions will meet in the title game, as No. 1 Neah Bay and No. 2 Mount Vernon Christian came away with wins in the semifinals. It’s a rematch of the 2022 title game, which was won by MVC.

The Red Devils ran away with their semifinal against No. 4 Crosspoint, winning 67-34, while the Hurricanes outscored Waterville-Mansfield 17-0 in the fourth quarter to win 43-28. Amber Swan led Neah Bay with 22 points, while Ezrah Ray added 15. Allie Heino scored 22 while shooting 10 for 14 from the field to lead Mount Vernon Christian.

No. 6 Oakesdale earned its spot in the 4th/6th game with a 57-44 win over No. 7 Wilbur-Creston-Keller. Lucy Hockett, Payton Davis, and Grace Perry combined for 46 of Oakesdale’s 57 points, while Brystal Neilsen led the Wildcats with 19.

Joining the Nighthawks in the 4th/6th game is No. 9 Sunnyside Christian, which came away with a 37-32 win over No. 12 Garfield-Palouse.

It was another defensive battle for the Knights, but Taylor Andringa and Hailey Van Wieringen’s 25 combined points was enough to put them through to Saturday. Kyra Brantner led the Vikings with nine points.
