Headed to the coast this weekend? You’re going to want to be extra careful.
There’s an enhanced sneaker wave threat Sunday through Tuesday, the National Weather Service says.
Sneaker waves, the weather service says, run significantly farther up the beach than other waves, which can be a cold, dangerous and even deadly surprise for beachgoers.
Those surprise waves can knock you over and pull you out to sea, where the water temperature at this time of year is around 55 degrees.
And it’s not just the cold water. Those surprise waves can carry logs, which are big enough and heavy enough to cause serious injury or death, the weather service says.
If you’re on the beach, the weather service says, your best bet is to stay alert and never turn your back on the ocean. Keep kids and pets within grabbing distance and away from the surf zone. And avoid the rocks, logs and jetties near the surf zone, too.
Additionally, it’s a good idea to watch the waves from higher ground for about 20 minutes or so before moving closer to the water, the weather service says.
