Black Hills tops short-handed Centralia to sweep season series

TUMWATER — The Black Hills girls golf team swept the season series against EvCo foe Centralia with a 108-46 win at Tumwater Valley Golf Club Wednesday afternoon.

The Wolves also defeated the Tigers 83-39 at Riverside back on March 19. Ellie Johnson scored 31 points in the modified stableford scoring system Wednesday after scoring 31 points in the first meeting, leading Black Hills in both wins.

Melody Hackworth tacked on 21 points, Natalie Buchanan added 20, Megan Dolby scored 19, and Adeline Rice provided 17. Black Hills has seen consistency from its top scorers all season, which has led to several triple-digit outputs.

“All of these girls are playing a lot better and more comfortable on the course. Everybody’s getting more confident in all their clubs,” Black Hills head coach Jackson Martin said.

Johnson didn’t take more than six strokes to achieve par at any point in the match, using just three on her second hole. Martin credited the junior for her hard work and desire to improve.

“She’s very consistent, and she’s got a lot of length. She hits the ball far. She works in the offseason all year and plays other tournaments outside of high school golf,” Martin said. “That really improves her game and separates her from a lot of high school golfers.”

Centralia was led by Corin Meek, who scored 20 points. Lily Ferch nearly matched her with 19 points, and Sydney Styger scored seven. The Tigers were limited to four total golfers and just two varsity against the Wolves.

“I thought our top two girls played pretty well, and then the others are really JV girls, and so it was more of an experience for them to get in nine holes at a different golf course,” Centralia head coach Hal Gronseth said. “We’re just learning right now that you’re hitting the ball further than you thought you do, so you have to be a little bit more careful. This week, we haven’t had our four varsity kids with us, so it’s disappointing to have them gone for a week.”

Black Hills heads to Newaukum Valley Monday to face W.F. West, while Centralia visits Aberdeen on Monday.
