Board of Thurston County Commissioners on Summer Recess From June 26 to July 14

Beginning June 26, the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will start a summer recess lasting three weeks, according to a news release.

From June 26 to July 14, no board briefings or BOCC regular meetings will be held. The BOCC authorized the recess when it approved its 2023 schedule in January.

“This is an attempt to be proactive on the summer vacations of the board and staff and to streamline the business of the BOCC during the summer months,” Thurston County Manager Ramiro Chavez said in the release.

Thurston County Commissioner and BOCC Chair Carolina Mejia added the county’s regular business will continue during the recess.

“This is our first time holding a summer recess. We want to take what we learn from this recess and, as the board expands, potentially make this an annual event so we can coordinate schedules as a board,” Mejia said in the release.

Thurston County voters approved expanding the BOCC, raising the total number of commissioner positions from three to five along with a subsequent redistricting of the county, during last year’s general election. Given the county’s population, the board’s expansion would have eventually been required by Washington state law.
