Bank of America on Tuesday announced the company is directing $250,000 to the American Red Cross to support relief and recovery efforts across the Pacific Northwest, including in Spokane.
"The loss and destruction caused by these wildfires is heartbreaking," said Lauren Murray, Spokane and Boise market president.
The Old Trails, Fairview and Autumn Lane fires broke out on Aug. 1 in the Spokane area, together torching hundreds of homes.
"Recovery will take time, and the impacts of these fires will be felt long after the flames are extinguished. Our thoughts are with the brave first responders and everyone affected as communities begin the process of rebuilding and healing."
The philanthropic dollars will help provide emergency shelter, meals and other forms of recovery support for Spokane and other communities impacted by western wildfires. Additionally, the company is matching employee donations to disaster relief nonprofits. The company has 330 employees who live and work in the greater Spokane region, according to the company.
"Bank of America's generosity helps Red Cross act quickly to support families impacted by disasters at a moment's notice," said Anne McKeough, chief development officer at the American Red Cross.
"As disasters like these wildfires become more frequent and intense, the Red Cross continues to count on extraordinary donors like Bank of America to help deliver hope and comfort to people and communities in times of great need," she said.
Bank of America has a history of disaster relief work. The bank gave $4.5 million total in philanthropic support for the Los Angeles wildfires, in addition to 233 thousand volunteer hours since 2023.
Bank of America's donation ranks among the highest institutional donations for supporting western wildfire recovery efforts. Walmart and the Walmart Foundation committed $500,000 to "Spokane Wildfire Relief," Boeing gave $250,000 for "Spokane wildfires," and the Seattle headquartered WaFd bank gave $100,000 for "Spokane and Eastern Washington Wildfire Relief." It's unclear how much of the $250,000 that Bank of America is giving to the Red Cross will be allocated toward Spokane specifically.
