The Boistfort Lions Club will soon host its annual Walk-N-Knock fundraiser to collect nonperishable food items and monetary donations for the holiday season.
The 40th anniversary of the event begins 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, and covers the Boistfort School District, according to event organizer Barry Panush.
“Our task is to deliver your donations of food and monetary donations to the Food Bank of Lewis County,” Panush told The Chronicle.
Panush’s brother, Brian Panush, started the local tradition 40 years ago after learning about it from the Lions Club in Longview.
The Boistfort Lions, who average about 70 years in age, according to Panush, will be assisted by Boistfort students during the walk. Donations will go to the Pe Ell Food Bank.
Panush said the Walk-N-Knock allows for mentorship between the students and Lions.
“Our job is we serve,” Panush said. “I’m just proud of our community.”
Panush said the Walk-N-Knock typically collects around 2,000 pounds of food — a literal ton — and $2,000 in cash each year.
“Not bad for a community of about 900 people,” he added.
Volunteers are expected to gather at the Boistfort Community Church before embarking on their route, Panush told The Chronicle.
Those who won’t be home during the walk were told to leave their donations at the church.
