Deputies booked a 12-year-old into Clark County juvenile detention after he allegedly assaulted a school bus driver in Vancouver on Monday — and then climbed on top of the bus.

Clark County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Ashley Korslien told The Oregonian/OregonLive in an email that deputies responded at around 2:30 p.m. near Northeast St. Johns Road and 78th Street.

After the 12-year-old climbed on top of the bus, sheriff’s office negotiators tried to talk the Battle Ground School District student down for 30 minutes. When he finally got off the roof, the other students were then able to safely get off the bus, Korslien said.

Deputies took the boy into custody and booked him into juvenile detention for third-degree assault and resisting arrest, Korslien said.

Battle Ground School District spokesperson Amanda Richter told The Oregonian/OregonLive in an email that “student and driver safety are a top priority,” for the district; she added that it is her understanding that the driver who was assaulted is OK.
