Bremerton man found dead after shootout with law enforcement

Investigators believe a 38-year-old Bremerton man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a shootout with Kitsap County Sheriff's deputies.

Deputies responded around 8:45 p.m. Monday to a home in the 8400 block of Northwest Wildcat Lake Road near Bremerton after a woman reported a man possibly under the influence of methamphetamine had assaulted her and staged weapons throughout the home while talking about “shooting it out with law enforcement,” McCarty said. The 40-year-old woman was able to leave the residence safely shortly after deputies arrived.

McCarty said the woman had received a no contact order against the man, but she gave him permission to return to the home the previous Saturday.

A Kitsap County sheriff’s office SWAT team entered the home after getting a search warrant. The man fired several rounds at officers who returned fire. McCarty said the man continued shooting randomly inside the house.

King County sheriff’s office deputies, Poulsbo and Bremerton police and Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife officers helped deputies evacuate nearby residents to safety. A negotiator attempted to get the man to surrender peacefully, but he did not respond.

Kitsap County drone operators were unavailable at the time of the standoff, so officials reached out to King, Pierce and Thurston County sheriff's offices to see if they could help observe the man inside.

The Pierce County sheriff’s office flew a drone into the home around 3:30 a.m. and found the man dead with a firearm in his hand.

The Office of Independent Investigations is investigating the shooting.
