Authorities say a car struck and killed a pedestrian early Saturday in the median of Interstate 5 near Rocky Point in Cowlitz County.

A Washington State Patrol press memo says the 27-year-old man from Independence, Missouri, was attempting to cross the southbound lanes when fleeing a previous collision, but was struck by a Honda CR-V at about 12:15 a.m.

The name of the pedestrian was originally withheld, pending notification to the next of kin, but was later revealed to be William B. Netz. No information about the pedestrian’s prior collision is listed in the report.

The driver of the Honda — Paul F. Kearney, 43, of Gresham — was not injured.

The cause of the accident is listed as “pedestrian in the roadway,” and troopers do not know yet if drugs or alcohol were involved, according to the memo.
