A Deer Park coffee stand employee broke her femur and pelvis after a wheel dislodged from a car traveling on U.S. Highway 395, rolled off the road and struck her while she was working outside the business Tuesday morning.

A 2005 Honda Pilot was heading south on the highway about 8:40 a.m., just north of Cleveland Road, when a wheel came off the car and rolled across a parking lot, striking Hannah Petty, 34, of Clayton, according to a Washington State Patrol news release.

Petty was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center.

WSP Sgt. Jerry Walker said Petty was working at Rozy'z Hot Shotz at the time of the incident.

The coffee stand posted on Facebook an update from Petty's mom. The stand and mother called the incident a "freak accident."

The mother's post stated Petty was taping a poster on the coffee stand when the car lost its tire.

"The tire flew off the car, rolled and bounced and literally missed everything in its path, except Hannah! It knocked her about 10 feet and down to the ground," the post stated.

The mother credited Petty's boss, customers, bystanders and medics who took "phenomenal care of her."

Petty is in the intensive care unit. She broke her femur, which she had broken before, and her pelvis. An artery also tore, which caused a hematoma in her chest where the blood pooled, the post said.

"Her injuries are extensive, and she's going to have a long recovery unfortunately," the post stated.

The driver, 35-year-old Danyail Shellhouse, of Chewelah, was cited on suspicion of operating a vehicle with defective equipment, Walker said.
