The Centralia College basketball teams split a doubleheader against Pierce College on Wednesday, as the women won 55-44 while the men lost 58-55.
The women’s team (5-14, 2-4 NWAC) took control of the game early, taking the lead in the first four minutes and leading the rest of the way. Pierce did get within four late in the third, but CC quickly re-extended its lead to 13 midway through the fourth.
Ella Baumgartner led the Trailblazers in scoring with 19 points, while Marecia Barnett added 14 points, six assists, and four rebounds.
Meletave Fonohea just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds, and Jazmin Moctezuma added six points and five assists. Kate Carpenter tallied nine rebounds and blocked five shots while scoring two points.
After a close first half, the men (2-19, 1-6 NWAC) were clinging onto a two-point lead with about a minute to play, but Pierce took the lead in the final 60 seconds and held on.
Shay Brannon logged a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Andrew Collins added 13 points and three steals. Kevin Williams didn’t get on the scoresheet, but he nabbed four steals and brought down four rebounds while adding a pair of assists.
Both teams will be back home next Wednesday, Feb. 5, for a doubleheader against Lower Columbia College.
