The Centralia Amateur Radio emergency services team has announced it will participate in Amateur Radio Field Day.
The event starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, and concludes at 11 a.m. Sunday, June 29. Field day is sponsored by Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL), according to a news release from the Centralia Amateur Radio Emergency Services.
The Amateur Radio Relay League is the national association for amateur radio in the United States, representing over 170,000 FCC-licensed amateurs. Amateur radio, often called “ham radio,” has been around for a century. In that time, it has grown into a worldwide community of licensed operators who use the airwaves with every conceivable means of communication technology, according to the release.
ARRL Field Day is held on the fourth Saturday of June each year, and thousands of amateur radio operators gather to operate from remote locations.
The Centralia Amateur Radio Emergency Services team, K7CEM, is composed of FCC-licensed amateur radio operators who volunteer to provide backup communications during emergency situations. Volunteers train to conduct urban and rural searches for lost or missing persons, as well as provide communications during community events such as parades and summer festivals.
