One of Centralia College’s most decorated professors will be the featured speaker at the Olympic Club’s History Pub Night on Monday, Sept. 25.

Professor Pat Pringle will provide a presentation titled “Buried and Submerged Forests of the Pacific Northwest.” It will provide a look into ancient landslides, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, according to a press release from the college.

Pringle retired this year from Centralia College after 12 years of teaching. He is a professor emeritus of earth sciences. Prior to his teaching career, he was a research geologist for the state’s Department of Natural Resources Geological Survey from 1990 to 2005 and for the U.S. Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory from 1982 to 1990.

“Pringle studies volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides and debris flows using radiocarbon and tree-ring analysis to establish the history of past geologic events,” according to the release.

His work is widely published and includes a guidebook to the geology of Mount Rainier National Park that details the geological history of the mountain and its associated features, such as lava domes and flows, caves and glaciers.

Pringle won the Washington State Association of College Trustees Faculty Member Award of the Year in 2016, as well as The Evergreen State College Teacher Excellence Award. In 2009, he received Centralia College’s exceptional faculty award.

The monthly History Pub Night lecture series at the Olympic Club is sponsored by Centralia College and the Timberland Regional Library. Doors open at 6 p.m. Pringle will speak at 7 p.m.

The lecture is free and open to all ages.
