Centralia High School’s Agriscience Department welcomed first graders from Jefferson Lincoln Elementary on Thursday, April 17, for a hands-on Life Science Field Day — the first event of its kind since March 2020.

The event, hosted under sunny skies, brought elementary students to the high school campus to learn about the structure and function of different animals, as well as life cycles and plant germination, the Centralia School District said in a news release.

The experience was entirely student-led, with high school agriscience students guiding lessons and activities for their younger peers.

As part of the day’s exploration, students learned about plant structure and participated in a germination lab science activity. Each first grader returned to their classroom with a germination experiment to continue observing, along with a custom-designed lab handbook to reinforce their learning.

“Our students did an amazing job leading and teaching today,” said Centralia High School agriscience teacher Kendra Meek. “It was a joy to see them step into leadership roles and share their knowledge in such a meaningful way.”

The morning session featured smaller groups and an engaging atmosphere, while the afternoon brought an exciting group of 80 first graders, the Centralia School District said in a news release.

The Field Day continued Friday, April 18, with visits from the last two elementary schools, wrapping up a two-day celebration of science, agriculture and student leadership.
