Several Centralia High School students found success at SkillsUSA Nationals this year, as well as at the Southwest Washington Fair.
The high school provided a roundup of some of the standout students to The Chronicle.
Six students attended SkillsUSA Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia, which lasted from June 23 to 27. Will Guthrie and Evan Thummel took home first place gold medals in the 3D Animation and Visualization competition; Owen Sharp competed in Welding; and Pedro Picazo, Saryn Pelesky and Carlos Cozar-Martinez competed in Occupational Health and Safety.
Students’ thoughts
Three Centralia High School students provided statements about their SkillsUSA experience.
“What stands out most is the experience of traveling and being in Atlanta with thousands of other students from across the country. Sitting in the State Farm Arena with 18,000 SkillsUSA members — future leaders, technicians and designers my own age — was empowering and inspiring,” Saryn Pelesky’s said. “It made me realize that big career goals are possible, not just something adults talk about. For me, SkillsUSA has been more than a club. It has been a life-changing experience that’s helped shape my future."
"Joining SkillsUSA has proved to be one of the best decisions of my life so far. I am so thankful for all of the opportunities to learn that I have been blessed with. Competing at the regional, state and national level for welding allowed me to learn more than I could have ever imagined in such a short amount of time,” Owen Sharp said. “The sense of community within SkillsUSA is amazing, and the experiences I have experienced have been like none other. The memories I have made through SkillsUSA trips and competitions will prove to be some of the best throughout my high school experience. I would encourage everyone interested in SkillsUSA to consider joining."
"Competing at a national level was amazing! We were able to meet lots of people and industry professionals and make some new friends as well,” Will Guthrie said. “I hope we can make it back next year. It was truly one of the coolest experiences of my life, and an amazing opportunity to grow and learn."
