Lily Lewis of Centralia recently spent a week in Olympia serving as a page in the Washington state House of Representatives, sponsored by Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Chehalis.
As part of the House Page Program, Lewis helped with daily duties around the Capitol, including delivering messages and documents for lawmakers and staff, assisting on the House floor and attending page school to learn more about the legislative process.
“Lily brought a great attitude, a strong sense of curiosity, and an eagerness to learn during her time in Olympia,” said Abbarno, House Republican Caucus chair. “It was a pleasure to sponsor her and see her jump into the experience. The Page Program gives students a firsthand look at how state government works, and Lily made the most of that opportunity.”
Lewis is 14 years old and a ninth-grade homeschool student. Her interests include public speaking, dancing, carpentry, marksmanship and learning new things, a news release from Abbarno stated.
She is also learning to fly and hopes to earn her pilot’s license.
“Lily’s interest in aviation is such a fun and impressive part of her story,” Abbarno added. “Learning to fly takes confidence, focus, and determination, and those qualities were clear throughout her week at the Capitol. She has a bright future ahead, and I was proud to have her represent our community in the Page Program.”
The House Page Program gives students ages 14 to 16 an opportunity to spend a week at the Capitol during the legislative session, where they gain firsthand experience in state government while supporting the House’s work. In addition to helping on the floor, pages attend classes and receive civic education instruction throughout the week.
