The Centralia Downtown Association (CDA) is inviting the community to come together from noon to 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, on the Centralia College lawn near the clock tower for Centralia Founder’s Day, a community celebration honoring Centralia founder George Washington and the legacy of generosity, perseverance and community he left behind.
This year’s celebration — centered around the theme “Founded in Generosity. United in Community” — will offer an afternoon of history, connection, food, art and activities for all in attendance, a news release from the CDA stated.
The CDA is partnering with Multiculturally Minded Lewis County to welcome special guest Raina Wagner with the Washington state Attorney General’s Office Civil Rights Division, who will join local speakers in recognizing George Washington’s story and the importance of preserving and sharing the history of Centralia’s founder.
Guests can enjoy free lunch provided by Flaming Pig BBQ and birthday cupcakes while supplies last, along with family-friendly activities and a collaborative community art project designed to celebrate Centralia’s past while looking toward its future.
“Founder’s Day is about more than looking back,” said MacKenzie McGee, executive director of the CDA, said in the release. “George Washington believed deeply in helping his neighbors and building a community where people could thrive. We want this celebration to carry that spirit forward by bringing people together, giving back and reminding ourselves of the role each of us can play in making Centralia a place we are proud to call home.”
In conjunction with Founder’s Day, the CDA is coordinating the Founder’s Pantry Bag Project, an effort inspired by George Washington’s reputation for generosity and care for his neighbors, according to the release.
The goal is to fill 100 pantry bags with basic food staples to be distributed to community members in need. Community members and businesses are invited to help support the effort, with $25 providing one complete pantry bag.
Following the community celebration, attendees are invited to gather at Washington Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. for a graveside memorial service honoring George Washington and reflecting on his life and lasting impact on Centralia.
Throughout August, the CDA is also working to bring additional attention and care to George Washington Park, including beautification efforts, community art and lighting intended to add vibrancy, aesthetics and safety to one of downtown Centralia’s most important public spaces.
