A Centralia man made an out-of-custody preliminary appearance in Lewis County Superior Court Wednesday after being summoned and charged with one count of possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance.

Tomas Leonardo-Vargas, 52, faces up to 10 years in prison and $25,000 in fines for the alleged offense.

While conducting a search of Leonardo-Vargas’s home, Centralia police discovered multiple bags of a “white crystalline substance,” along with “multiple dime bags and a small red scale,” according to court documents.

The suspected methamphetamine reportedly weighed in at over half a pound.

During the preliminary hearing, Deputy Prosecutor Brandi Archer indicated that Leonardo-Vargas’s presence in court justified a release without bail.

Defense attorney Rachael Tiller agreed.

Judge Paul Strophy ordered Leonardo-Vargas to return to court Oct. 16 for an arraignment and trial setting. Rachel Hunt was assigned to represent him.
